There are two sources of inspiration for this sculpture. The Three Graces has been a subject for art since the ancient Classical Greeks. The Romans did their own versions, as well as famous artists like Raphael and Rubens. I thought it might be interesting to use this triptych motif to show how many sculptures are constructed. The other inspiration is a series of motion figure studies
of nude women by Eadweard Muybridge in the late 19th century. A recurring
theme was to have a woman come out, bend to pick up a shawl, and then
wrap the fabric around her and return. I thought the juxtaposition |
